Assistant Administrator for Strategic Communications and Public Affairs
LuAnn Canipe was named Assistant Administrator for Strategic Communications and Public Affairs in October 2012. Canipe oversees all external and internal communications responsibilities across the agency, developing strategic communications initiatives that are implemented nationwide. She heads a team of public affairs processionals, responsible for media relations, speech writing, graphic arts, internal and external websites and employee communications.
Before becoming Assistant Administrator, she served as a senior adviser and Director of Communications for the congressional office of U.S. Representative Brad Miller. In this capacity, she managed and developed communications and media strategies for Miller’s office providing day to day oversight of staff and issues that gained national media attention. She also managed strategic communications for three re-election campaigns.
In addition, she served as the Press Secretary for U.S. Representative Grace Napolitano, where she developed and managed media strategy and messaging for key U.S. House of Representatives legislative issues.
Canipe began her career in communications as a broadcast journalist, which spanned 14 years and included work in five different television newsrooms including WBFF-TV in Baltimore and WJLA-TV in Washington, D.C.
Her government service includes experience in policy, strategic communications, crisis management, campaign media relations and on-the-record spokesperson. She has a deep knowledge of the legislative and communication process.
Canipe earned a Bachelor of Science in Merchandising with a double-major in Communications from Western Carolina University.
