Motivating Officers and Encouraging Collaboration

Spotlight On

William Hastings is the Behavior Detection and Analysis (BDA) Transportation Security Manager at California’s Fresno Yosemite International Airport where he also serves as the Playbook Coordinator. After joining TSA in 2007, and working as a TSO at Washington Dulles International Airport, he transferred back to California, his home state. Shortly after arriving at Los Angeles International Airport he was promoted to STSO, and in late 2012 started at Fresno in his current role.

While at TSA he has been inspired by others and strives to pass that inspiration forward. As he advanced professionally, he no longer saw TSA as a job but as a chosen career. In fact, he considers helping advance the agency a personal responsibility.

As part of that desire, he regularly visits the TSA IdeaFactory site and contributes to idea discussions. Most recently, his post, “TSA – The Most Effective Federal Agency Ever (Really),” was recognized by the IdeaFactory team as an idea that “Received the Most Comments, Most Ratings, and Most Shared.” In May, Hastings will start at Minneapolis/Saint Paul International Airport where he will be part of a leadership team for the BDA program.

"What I do matters because I am in a position where I can empower our Officers to be the best at what they do. I am always encouraging them to look for ways to improve our agency and they have never failed to impress me with their insight. Our Behavior Detection Officer (BDO) team has made great strides with strengthening our operation and working collaboratively with the entire screening force. By emphasizing communication best practices we significantly improved collaboration between BDOs and the other checkpoint Officers. That helped our team members better engage passengers coming through the checkpoint and also expanded the professional capabilities of our workforce. When we work together as a united front there is nothing that we cannot achieve.

"What I find most rewarding about my work at TSA is serving alongside the most astonishing people I have ever met. This is an agency born of individuals who came together from all walks of life during a national crisis because they were compelled to make a difference. We are the ones who never forget and will never stop fighting to make sure that our nation does not have to endure such horrors again. I come to work every day excited to see what we can achieve together. Through hard work, integrity, and dedication, we ensure that TSA is the most effective federal agency in history.

"The most challenging part of my job is breaking down negative perceptions about TSA. This agency offers each of us the opportunity to pursue a great federal career. Motivating Officers about their TSA career is paramount to our success as an agency. There is no greater pool of transportation security experts in the world than TSA Officers, and I will continue to do everything I possibly can to guide our frontline workforce toward becoming leaders across our agency."
