WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Transportation Security Administration today named Mike Golden as assistant administrator, Operational Process and Technology.  In this role, Golden will serve as the agency’s Chief Technology Officer overseeing the implementation and development of security technologies across several modes of transportation.

Golden joins TSA from Southwest Airlines where he most recently served as senior director of Airport Security Technologies.  He is well known in the industry and has participated on several government committees and panels, including TSA’s Scientific Advisory Panel and Bag Screening Investment Study.  He also has worked with the departments of Defense and Energy on cargo and port security technologies.

“Mike has a proven track record of deploying practical technology security measures that can be quickly implemented,” said Kip Hawley, TSA administrator. “His 20-plus years at Southwest, his experience creating their airport security technology department, and his experience collaborating with manufacturers, designers and other industry groups will be invaluable in this new role.”

Examples of security measures Golden and his team were involved in developing include placing long tables in areas leading up to the security checkpoint so passengers can better prepare for screening, and developing a screening bin return system that reduces on-the-job injuries and increases passenger flow through the checkpoint.

He is also the holder of several aviation security-related patents.
