Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Immigration Information Officers at a District Office provide technical counsel to the public about immigration and nationality laws and regulations and elicit information to serve as the foundation for administrative and/or legal action. They screen applications and petitions filed for benefits under the Immigration and Nationality Act for completeness, appropriate fees and proper supporting documents; determine prima facie eligibility for applications; and dissuade aliens from filing for benefits for which they are not eligible. Exploring all avenues of assistance available to clients, the Immigration Information Officer determines the more advantageous benefits and assists clients in completing the required forms while questioning clients to determine if they are attempting to submit applications under fraudulent situations and reasons. This position may be filled at GS-5 through GS-8 levels.

Requirements:

Education:

Successful completion of a bachelor's degree or a full 4-year course of study from an accredited college or university in any field leading to a bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required experience at the GS-5 level. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester or 45 quarter hours. Appropriate combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience also may be used to meet the total qualification requirements for the GS-5 grade level.

Training:

Candidates selected for the position who have not already graduated from the Immigration Information Officer Basic Training Course (IIOBTC) in Glynco, GA will be required to attend this 5-½ week course and to achieve a cumulative passing grade on the examinations.  Travel expenses for training will be at agency expense.
