As a member of the elite Patriot Guard Riders of Nebraska, Supervisory Transportation Security Officer (STSO) Darryl Price of Eppley Field in Omaha has attended more than 20 military funerals throughout Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri and Illinois.

While off duty, Price has traveled to funerals by motorcycle, sometimes on cold and bitter days, and has also welcomed soldiers home from Iraq, Afghanistan and other deployed locations.

"My family has always supported the military," said Price, who was in the U.S. Air Force security for 22 years. His father and brother both served in the Navy. "I feel honored and duty bound to attend [the funerals] and honor our American servicemen and women."

Across the country, Patriot Guard Riders provide motorcycle funeral escorts for U.S. soldiers killed in action or while on active duty.

As a ride captain Price is responsible for setting up ride routes, maintaining flag lines, blocking the visibility and sounds of protesters during military funerals, receiving grieving families and escorting a casket from the airport to the funeral home, church or cemetery.

He also coordinates with the local police agencies, military casualty affairs staff, airports and TSA representatives to ensure a dignified reception and escort.

Price said Patriot Guard members have one thing in common besides motorcycles – an unwavering respect for those who risk their lives for America's freedom and security.

"One of the most moving things we do is to form a flag line," said Price. "When you see as many as 300 American flags on display, it really drives home the sacrifice these fallen heroes have made."
