At Honolulu International Airport last week, TSO Brad Young correctly identified an undeclared firearm in a checked bag, and not just any firearm, an assault rifle with more than 10 empty magazines.

During the on screen resolution process, Young and LTSO John Hennesy properly identified the improperly packed weapon.

A TSO for over five years, Young says finds like this are very important. "Identifying items like undeclared firearms ensures the safety of the traveling public," he said. "Passengers need to know there is a way to get a weapon like this through the baggage screening process, they just have to follow the regulations."

Federal regulations for the transport of firearms include declaring the weapon to the air carrier, the weapon must be unloaded and in the proper locked carrying case.

Once the weapon was packed properly in a locked case loaned by the airline, the passenger was cleared to fly on his originally scheduled flight.
