Lead Transportation Security Officer Giff Nickol's quick action helped save a passenger's life at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport on May 9.
Nickol, a retired firefighter and a certified emergency medical technician, responded immediately upon seeing a man lying unconscious on the ground. He determined that the man was experiencing a cardiac arrest, and with two other passengers began to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, alternating with mouth-to-mouth and chest compressions. An automated external defibrillator was also used.
In a short time the man, 73, started breathing and was taken to a hospital. Nickol called it a "a well-coordinated team effort."
"We are all very proud of Giff's selfless act in saving the gentleman's life," said Deputy Federal Security Director Joe Salvator. "It's an honor to have Giff as a part of our team."
