Transportation security officers Rebecca Grant and Dave Thomas of Mobile (Ala.) Regional Airport traveled recently to San Antonio's Brooke Army Medical Center where they personally delivered handmade quilts to combat-wounded service members.

Work on six quilts began Sept. 11, 2007 and more than 60 officers and staff from TSA Mobile helped with the effort. The Mobile Airport Authority joined the project by completing an additional quilt.

The patriotic-themed quilts were presented along with photo journals containing poems, photos of the quilts being made and dedications from TSA.

"We're fighting the same enemy, just at different levels," said one soldier, expressing his gratitude to TSA Mobile.

Thomas called the event "a life-changing experience," and Grant noted that "presenting the quilts to the wounded men made me feel a great honor to be an American citizen."

Mobile TSOs said they plan to make additional quilts and challenged other TSA offices and airports to do the same.

The quilts were made as part of the nationwide program sponsored by the Quilts of Valor Foundation, which facilitates distribution to service members.
