Mark Hatfield Named Director of TSA Communications Office

Mark O. Hatfield, Jr., a communications veteran in both the public and private sectors, has been named Director of the Office of Communications and Public Information at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

Hatfield has been Acting Director of the office since November 29. In the previous year he managed TSA's regional public affairs office in New York City with responsibility for media relations in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut. He also managed national news stories for TSA headquarters.

"Mark brings a wealth of information and experience to his new assignment," said Rear Adm. David M. Stone, Acting TSA Administrator. "He is continuing TSA's practice of being responsive to the media and the public, providing high-quality leadership as our communications team explains ever-evolving security measures needed to protect against terrorists."

Hatfield's experience in the private sector includes running his own communications consultancy; Vice President of Public Relations for Metiom, Inc., a New York software company; Managing Director for Public Affairs at Burson-Marsteller, a global public relations firm headquartered in New York; Director of Public Affairs for Schmidt/Westerdahl Group, an advertising and public relations firm in Portland, Ore.; and Director of Advance for The Beach Boys' 'Sea to Shining Sea' tour in 1985. He also served on the national staff of the 1980 and 1984 Reagan presidential campaigns and the 1988 Bush/Quayle campaign.

His experience in the public sector includes Director of Corporate Communications for the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey; Director of Legislative Affairs for the U.S. Technology Administration; Public Affairs Officer for the U.S. Department of Energy; and Public Relations and Special Events Manager for the Bonneville Power Administration in Portland.
