TSA Purchases 37 More Explosives Detection Machines From L-3 Communications Corporation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) today announced it has purchased 37 eXaminer 6000 Explosives Detection System (EDS) machines from L-3 Communications Corporation of New York, N.Y. These machines will be in addition to the approximately 460 L-3 EDS machines already in use screening checked luggage at the nation's airports.

"TSA is purchasing these machines for permanent in-line checked baggage screening solutions that the agency is developing in partnership with various airports," said Rear Adm. David M. Stone, USN (Ret.), Assistant Secretary for Homeland Security for TSA. "TSA is currently operating eight in-line systems and there are nine in-line systems under construction."

These 37 machines will be integrated into airports' automated checked baggage conveyor systems. The new in-line EDS screening system will be a faster, more customer-friendly solution for screening 100 percent of all checked baggage for explosives. TSA is currently operating full in-line systems at eight airports in Boston; Boise, Idaho; Manchester, N.H.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Lexington, Ky.; Orange County, Calif.; Tulsa, Okla.; and Tampa, Fla. TSA is also operating an in-line EDS system for the international terminal in San Francisco. The airports with an in-line system under construction are Seattle; Dallas/Ft. Worth; Las Vegas, Denver; Los Angeles; Ontario, Calif.; Phoenix; Atlanta; and Harrisburg, Pa.

The L-3 Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity contract has a three-year ordering period for EDS machines, spare parts and related engineering services. This second order for 37 machines is valued at $32.86 million. Under the contract, the 37 EDS machines must be available for installation by February 28, 2005.

L-3 Communications will utilize several subcontractors on this project, including Analogic Corporation of Peabody, Mass., Hewlett Packard of Palo Alto, Calif., and Scandia of Largo, Fla.
