BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) today announced the selection of Derek "Rick" DePietro as federal security director (FSD) for Buffalo Niagara International Airport. As FSD, he will oversee all TSA operations at Buffalo Niagara and spoke operations at Chautauqua County and Niagara Falls International airports.

"Rick's professional track record speaks volumes of his dedication to TSA and we know he will provide excellent leadership as the FSD," said Mo McGowan, assistant administrator for Security Operations.

DePietro began his career with TSA in 2003 as transportation security manager at Erie International Airport. Since January 2007, DePietro has served as the assistant federal security director (AFSD) for screening at Pittsburgh International Airport and six spoke airports. Prior to that, he was assistant federal security director for screening at Erie (Pa.) International Airport and four spoke airports.

Before joining TSA, Rick spent 25 years in law enforcement with the Jamestown (N.Y.) Police Department. He served in the department's Street Crimes Unit, as an investigator with a multi-jurisdictional drug task force, and as a detective before retiring as a sergeant and shift commander.

Rick holds an Associate in Arts degree from Jamestown Community College and a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice administration from Rochester (N.Y.) Institute of Technology.

On Nov. 19, 2001, President Bush signed the Aviation and Transportation Security Act, which created TSA and established the authority of the FSD. The FSD is the chief federal security officer at the airport and in the region and the first point of contact when a transportation security issue arises.
