MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has named Kevin McCarthy as the federal security director for Memphis International Airport.

McCarthy joined TSA in July 2006 as federal security director for Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. There he helped coordinate the rebuilding of the TSA workforce and operations at the airport in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

"Kevin's performance under challenging circumstances in New Orleans and his exemplary service in the military have prepared him for the responsibility of overseeing federal security at the busiest air cargo airport in the world," said Mo McGowan, TSA's assistant administrator for Security Operations.

McCarthy served in a variety of positions during a 25-year career with the Navy including executive officer of the Naval Air Station, Joint Reserve Base in New Orleans, and deputy chief of staff for Plans and Policy of the Navy Reserve Forces Command. He completed deployments to the Azores, Iceland, Japan, Panama, Sicily and Spain. He retired from the Navy in 2006 with the rank of captain.

An FAA-licensed airline transport pilot, he flew during every assignment in his Navy career, logging more than 4,200 military flight hours. His personal military awards include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

McCarthy holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy and a Master of Aeronautical Science degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

He also will serve as federal security director for McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport in Jackson, Tenn.
