Security Operations - Deputy Executive Assistant Administrator
Melanie Harvey is the Deputy Executive Assistant Administrator for Security Operations. Prior to assuming her current role in September 2020, she served as the Deputy Assistant Administrator for International Operations. In her new role, Ms. Harvey is responsible for managing TSA’s workforce of over 53,000 employees worldwide, and a $4.1B annual budget. She oversees airport checkpoint, baggage, and air cargo screening operations for approximately 440 domestic airports and delivers advanced explosives detection capabilities through TSA’s canine and explosives specialist teams. Internationally, Ms. Harvey provides oversight for an additional 280 airports conducting last points of departure operations to and from the United States. Ms. Harvey is also responsible for enforcing regulatory compliance for transportation security worldwide, ensuring all modes of transportation including aviation, mass transit, passenger and freight rail, highway and motor carrier, maritime, pipeline, and air cargo are in compliance with domestic and international regulatory requirements.
In Ms. Harvey’s previous role, she served as the second-in-charge for oversight of TSA’s international mission to identify, analyze, and mitigate risks to international transportation security, particularly inbound aviation. As Deputy Assistant Administrator for International Operations, Ms. Harvey led a global workforce with offices in over 20 countries and collaborated with government and industry officials to secure the transportation network.
Ms. Harvey joined TSA in 2004, and has held various positions in headquarters and the field in the offices of Security Operations, Human Capital, and Training and Development. Her private sector experience includes working for Booz Allen Hamilton and Science Applications International Corporation, where she consulted on complex acquisitions for a variety of government and Fortune 500 clients. Following graduation from college, she negotiated contracts for ship conversion and construction as an Outstanding Scholar Intern with the Naval Sea Systems Command. Harvey earned degrees with Honors in Economics and Political Science from Frostburg State University in 1996 and is a graduate of TSA’s Senior Leadership Development Program.
