NEWARK, N.J. – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) today named Barbara Bonn Powell as deputy federal security director (DFSD) for Newark-Liberty International Airport. Powell has served as acting DFSD at Newark-Liberty since December 2006.
As acting DFSD, Powell assisted the FSD with all federal security responsibilities, including management of a security workforce of over 1,300 men and women at one of the busiest airports in the country.
"Barbara Powell is an excellent choice for this critical post," said Mo McGowan, assistant administrator, TSA Office of Security Operations. "The security officers and staff at Newark-Liberty are fortunate to have a manager so dedicated to ensuring a positive, productive and security-focused work environment."
Prior to assuming her role as acting deputy in December, Powell served as TSA's supervisory attorney-advisor for New Jersey field operations. In that capacity, Powell provided legal support on a range of security issues to TSA management at Newark-Liberty and Atlantic City International airports as well as the Federal Air Marshal Service's Newark Field Office.
Before joining TSA, Powell served as legal counsel to special agents, inspectors and auditors for the New York Field Division of the Bureau for Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF). During her tenure with ATF, she served as lead legal instructor at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Ga., and received the Outstanding Professional Employee of the Year Award in 2001. She worked as assistant counsel for the Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor before joining ATF in 1998.
Powell holds a bachelor's degree from Allegheny College in Meadville, Penn., and she earned her Juris Doctorate Degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She is a member of the bar of New York and of Pennsylvania.
