RENO, Nev. – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) today announced that now is the ideal time for travelers to enroll in TSA Pre✓® so they can enjoy the benefits of expedited screening during the upcoming holiday travel season.
Enrollment in TSA Pre✓® has been available locally since January 2014 at Fingerprinting Express, located at 1320 E. Plumb Lane. To date, more than 8,100 people have enrolled at the Reno location.
TSA Pre✓® is an expedited screening program that allows select passengers to leave on their shoes, light outerwear and belt, keep their laptop in its case and keep 3-1-1 compliant liquids/gels in a carry-on bag. Currently, only air travelers who are enrolled in a Department of Homeland Security Trusted Traveler program are eligible for TSA Pre✓® on a consistent basis.
Interested travelers who are U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents should make plans now to enroll. Fingerprinting Express, which is under contract to offer TSA Pre✓® enrollment services, will no longer provide this service after Friday, Dec. 18, 2015. Enrollment is offered Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
To begin the process, individuals can pre-enroll online. Follow the prompts and set up an appointment to visit the application center. Applicants are required to make an in-person visit to an application center to verify citizenship or immigration status, as well as to provide fingerprints.
Once vetted and approved, passengers will receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN) making them eligible to utilize TSA Pre✓® lanes on a consistent basis at security checkpoints at airports nationwide. Travelers are encouraged to save their KTN in their frequent flyer profiles. Additionally, those who purchase tickets via a third-party website or travel agency should manually enter their KTN each time they make an airline reservation.
Walk-ins are accepted at the Reno application location. However, appointments are recommended and can be booked online. There is a non-refundable application processing fee of $85 and the KTN is good for five years.
Individuals enrolled in U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Trusted Traveler programs (including Global Entry, NEXUS or SENTRI) are already eligible for TSA Pre✓®. They should use their PASSID as their KTN.
When someone is eligible for TSA Pre✓®, a code is embedded in the barcode of the boarding pass. A TSA officer will scan the barcode at the checkpoint and the passenger will be referred to the TSA Pre✓® lane if available. When no TSA Pre✓® lane is available, the passenger is still eligible to leave on their shoes, light outerwear and belt during the security screening process.
As always, TSA continues to incorporate random and unpredictable security measures both seen and unseen throughout the airport. All travelers will be screened, and no individual is ever guaranteed expedited screening.
A passenger must be traveling on a participating airline to receive the expedited screening benefits of TSA Pre✓®. Six airlines that serve Reno-Tahoe International Airport participate in TSA Pre✓® including Alaska Airlines; American Airlines; Delta AirLines; Jet Blue; Southwest Airlines and United Airlines.
TSA contracts with MorphoTrust USA to provide TSA Pre✓® enrollment services nationwide. Fingerprinting Express was under contract with MorphoTrust USA to serve as the application center in Reno. The suspension of enrollment services locally is temporary. MorphoTrust USA is actively seeking a new business partner in the Reno area to offer TSA Pre✓® enrollment. Once that partner has been selected, the availability, location and hours will be widely publicized.
