NEW YORK – Two individuals were detained by Port Authority Police at LaGuardia Airport yesterday after they were found to have artfully concealed weapons on them as they attempted to get through the Transportation Security Administration checkpoint to board their flight.

A male traveler was found to have a straight-edged razor concealed in the removable sole of one of his shoes. Inside the hidden compartment were the straight-edged razor and blade along with a tube of cologne.

A female traveler was found to have hidden a straight razor blade inside of a ball cap that she was traveling with, also on Monday. The blade was tucked behind the inside band of the hat near the size label.

Upon detecting the items, TSA officers immediately contacted the Port Authority Police Department, which responded and confiscated the items while officers conducted an investigation and then detained both travelers, who are facing local charges.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screens approximately 2 million passengers and their luggage every day for prohibited items, including weapons and explosives.  To do this, TSA uses imaging technology to safely screen passengers for any items which may be concealed under clothing, while X-ray units screen all carry-on baggage.
