Travelers who want a quicker way through a TSA checkpoint can still apply to TSA Pre✓® before the summer travel season takes off

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Local residents who plan to fly this summer and are interested in simplifying their trip through the Transportation Security Administration checkpoints, can apply for the popular TSA Pre✓® program in the Syracuse-Hancock International Airport terminal.   

This is predicted to be one of the busiest air travel summers the airline industry has seen in a very long time and with more people flying, lines are expected to grow at TSA checkpoints. Travelers who are enrolled in TSA Pre✓® or one of the other “trusted traveler” programs such as Global Entry, SENTRI or NEXUS are permitted to keep on their shoes, belts and light outerwear jacket and can leave their laptops and liquid 3-1-1 bags inside their carry-on bags when they go through the checkpoint.

The TSA Pre✓® lane at Syracuse-Hancock International Airport is open regularly throughout the day during peak throughput periods. The remainder of the day, TSA Pre✓® enrollees still receive the benefit of a shorter queue line and expedited screening; being permitted to leave on their shoes, belts, headwear, and light outer jackets through the checkpoint. TSA Pre✓® is just as valuable for the flight back home to Syracuse, because about 160 airports have dedicated TSA Pre✓® lanes to expedite passengers through busy checkpoints.

“TSA Pre✓® is our expedited security screening program that offers travelers departing from airports within the United States with smarter security and a better air travel experience,” says TSA’s upstate New York Federal Security Director Bart Johnson. “Being enrolled in TSA Pre✓® is convenient for passengers because it allows them to get through the screening process quicker, and here at TSA, we view it as a security enhancement because it allows us to focus greater attention on the passengers we know less about.”  

Travelers can make an appointment online at and complete their application in-person or as a walk-in at the TSA Pre✓® application center that is conveniently located inside Syracuse-Hancock International Airport, 1000 Col. Eileen Collins Blvd., Syracuse. The application center is located on the right side of the main terminal on Level 1 near the airport’s Security Office. The application center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This application process allows U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents to apply directly to TSA Pre✓® – an expedited screening program that allows travelers to leave on their shoes, light outerwear and belt, keep their laptop in its case and their 3-1-1 compliant liquids/gels bag in a carry-on, in select TSA airport checkpoint screening lanes. About 160 airports are participating in TSA Pre✓® nationwide and 12 airlines participate in the program including Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, Sun Country, United Airlines, WestJet, Virgin America and Air Canada.

The application fee is $85 and is good for five years. It can be paid at the time of your appointment by credit card, money order, company check, or certified/cashier’s check. Cash and personal checks are not accepted. Fingerprints are required during the in-person application session and applicants are also required to bring documentation proving identity and citizenship status.

After completing the application process, successful applicants will receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN) via U.S. mail within a few weeks that is valid for five years. The enrollee should enter the provided KTN in the “Known Traveler Number” field when booking airline reservations. The KTN also can be added when booking reservations online via a participating airline website, via phone call to the airline reservation center, or with the travel management company making reservations.  Additionally, the KTN can be entered in participating airline frequent flyer profiles, where it will be stored for future reservations.
