TSA Pre✓® application center opens at Raleigh-Durham International Airport

Local Press Release
Wednesday, December 2, 2015

MORRISVILLE, N.C. — The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) today announced the opening of a TSA Pre✓® application center conveniently located inside the airport. TSA Pre✓® is an expedited screening program that enables low-risk travelers to enjoy an efficient screening experience. For TSA Pre✓® travelers, there is no need to remove shoes, 3-1-1 liquids, laptops, light outerwear or belts.

Raleigh-Durham International Airport is one of approximately 150 airports in the country where passengers can experience expedited screening. The airlines serving RDU that participate in the program are Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, American Airlines, JetBlue, Sun Country Airlines, United Airlines, Air Canada and Alaska Airlines. The new application center is opposite Baggage Carousel 5 in Terminal 2.

TSA Pre✓® is part of the agency’s continuing efforts to focus resources and improve the passenger experience at security checkpoints by applying intelligence-driven, risk-based screening procedures. Through a variety of risk-based initiatives such as TSA Pre✓®, TSA provides effective security while gaining efficiencies and improving the travel experience for millions of passengers each week.

“TSA Pre✓® demonstrates our commitment to provide world-class effective, focused, and efficient security to the public we serve,” said TSA Acting Federal Security Director Beth Walker.

RDU becomes one of only 36 airports in the country (of more than 440 commercial airports) to have the convenience of an on-airport application center. The only other on-airport application center in North Carolina is at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. Raleigh area residents can also enroll at IdentiGo, 10911 Raven Ridge Road, Suite 103. Greensboro, Morehead City and Wilmington, North Carolina, also have centers. Across the state 40,000 travelers have already enrolled in the program.

In order to enroll, the TSA Pre✓® application process allows U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents to go through a pre-enrollment process online at tsa.gov and visit an application center to provide biographic information (i.e. a government issued ID showing current address), be fingerprinted, and provide a U.S. passport, a U.S. birth certificate or valid immigration documentation, as well as pay an application fee of $85 for a five-year membership. The TSA Pre✓® application program has reached a new milestone with more than 1.8 million travelers enrolled since TSA opened its first application center in December 2013.

Once approved, passengers will receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN) and will have the opportunity to utilize TSA Pre✓® lanes at security checkpoints at participating airports and on 12 airlines: Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, United Airlines, US Airways, OneJet and Virgin America.

Members of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Trusted Traveler program (Global Entry, NEXUS or SENTRI) already pre-qualify for TSA Pre✓® and will utilize their PASSID as their KTN.

Passengers are encouraged to save their KTN in each frequent flyer profile. Additionally, those who purchase their tickets via a third-party website or travel agency should enter their KTN each time they make a reservation.

If TSA determines a passenger is eligible for expedited screening through the TSA Pre✓® pre-screening process, information is imbedded in the barcode of the passenger’s boarding pass. TSA reads the barcode at the checkpoint and the passenger is referred to the TSA Pre✓® lane for expedited screening.

As always, TSA continues to incorporate random and unpredictable security measures both seen and unseen throughout the airport. All travelers will be screened, and no individual will be guaranteed expedited screening.
