TSA checkpoint at BWI Expands

Added lane at Concourse D checkpoint accommodates more travelers, reduces lines, offers TSA Pre✓®

BALTIMORE – An additional lane for passenger security screening has been installed at Baltimore/ Washington International Thurgood Marshall (BWI) Airport’s Concourse D checkpoint that increases the checkpoint’s capacity from five to six lanes and accommodates TSA Pre✓® passengers during peak travel periods of the day.

The new lane is temporary as a new checkpoint is expected to open later this fall that will enable travelers to access all gates in Concourses D and E. The new checkpoint, which is under construction, is known as the D/E Connector Program. Meanwhile, the benefits of the temporary lane will be seen immediately as it will reduce the time passengers are in line to go through the Transportation Security Administration’s screening process and will accommodate passengers enrolled in TSA Pre✓®. The average wait time at BWI checkpoints is typically less than 15 minutes, with the exception of the Concourse D checkpoint, which has experienced longer average wait times since several airlines shifted departure gates in April.

The new temporary configuration allows Concourse D’s checkpoint to provide TSA with the flexibility to convert two of that Concourse’s standard checkpoint lanes into TSA Pre✓® lanes during the peak travel times of the day.

The D/E Connector Program is a multi-phase development at BWI that will offer enhanced services for travelers and support additional growth in international travel. The project will create a new security checkpoint to serve domestic and international travelers, include a new secure connector between Concourse D and Concourse E, and configure airline gates to support additional international flights.

TSA screens in the neighborhood of 26,000 to 34,000 passengers per day at BWI, depending on the day of the week and time of year.
