TSA urges local residents to sign up for TSA Pre✓®

Local Press Release
Tuesday, July 26, 2016

SEATTLE – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) today encouraged local residents to apply for TSA Pre✓® at one of six locations in the Puget Sound area.

TSA Pre✓® is a trusted traveler program that allows flyers to leave on their shoes, light outerwear and belt, keep their laptop in its case and 3-1-1 compliant liquids/gels in a carry-on bag. TSA operates dedicated TSA Pre✓® lanes at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA).

Ten airlines that serve SEA participate in TSA Pre✓®, including Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, United Airlines and Virgin America. A passenger must be flying on a participating airline in order to be eligible to use the TSA Pre✓® lane.

“Travelers continue to praise TSA Pre✓® and the streamlined airport security experience it provides,” said Jeff Holmgren, Federal Security Director for the state of Washington. “Whether you travel once a week, once a month or once a year, applying for TSA Pre✓® is highly recommended.”

Interested travelers can apply for TSA Pre✓® at the following locations during the days and hours listed below:

In addition to the five permanent application centers listed above, a temporary application center will be open for five days beginning Tuesday, August 9, during the hours listed below:

Seattle Airport Marriott

Tuesday, August 9 and Wednesday August 10: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Thursday, August 11 to Saturday, August 13: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Local statistics show that more than 90,000 people have applied for TSA Pre✓® at one of the Puget Sound area centers since it was first offered locally in March 2014.

Travelers who are U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents can begin the process by going online and clicking “Apply Now.” Follow the prompts to set up an appointment. An in-person visit to the application center is required in order to verify citizenship or immigration status and to provide fingerprints.

To apply, applicants must bring a current U.S. passport or driver’s license and certified copy of a birth certificate. There is a nonrefundable application processing fee of $85 and trusted traveler status is good for five years. Walk-ins are accepted, but will be enrolled on a first-come, first-serve basis around scheduled appointments.

Once approved, passengers will receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN) making them eligible to utilize TSA Pre✓® lanes on a consistent basis at security checkpoints at airports nationwide. Children 12 and younger are permitted to use the TSA Pre✓® lane when traveling with a TSA Pre✓® eligible parent or guardian.

All members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including those serving in the Reserves and National Guard, are eligible for expedited screening without enrolling in TSA Pre✓®. They do not need to be in uniform and they can use it while on personal or official travel. Members of the Armed Forces should use their 10-digit Department of Defense number located on the back of their Common Access Card as their KTN when making flight reservations.

Recently, there has been a surge in TSA Pre✓® enrollments across the country. In late June 2016, TSA Pre✓® enrollments nationwide hit the 3 million mark. This came just five months after enrollments reached 2 million in mid-January. There are currently more than 360 enrollment centers located nationwide.

Nationwide, an average of 2.1 million passengers are screened through airport security checkpoints every day. TSA projects this summer will be the busiest on record.

Enrolling as a trusted traveler allows passengers to expedite their screening process and TSA officers are better able to focus their efforts on passengers who present an unknown risk to aviation security. Travelers are encouraged to apply for TSA Pre✓® so they can enjoy expedited screening when departing from a U.S. airport on a participating air carrier.

As always, TSA continues to incorporate random and unpredictable security measures both seen and unseen throughout the airport. All travelers will be screened, and no individual will be guaranteed expedited screening.
