CHICAGO — The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) today announced the opening of a new application site for TSA Pre✓®, an expedited screening program that allows travelers to leave on their shoes, light outerwear and belt, keep their laptop in its case and their 3-1-1 compliant liquids/gels bag in a carry-on, in select screening lanes.
The newly opened TSA Pre✓® application center is located in the baggage claim area on the lower level of Terminal 1, which serves United Airlines. Participants may pre-enroll at universalenroll.dhs.gov and the location will also accept a limited number of walk-ins. United Airlines made the space available for the TSA Pre✓® application center in the terminal and is enabling its United MileagePlus members to use 10,000 miles to fully cover the cost of the application.
The TSA Pre✓® application process allows U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents to go through a pre-enrollment process online at tsa.gov and visit an application center to provide biographic information (e.g. name, date of birth, address, etc.), fingerprints, payment and valid required identity and citizenship/immigration documentation. This program requires an application fee of $85 for a five-year membership.
Additionally, United Airlines and TSA plan to install several state-of-the-art, automated security lanes at Chicago O’Hare later this year. The new screening lanes incorporate technology that enhances security effectiveness while decreasing the time travelers spend in security screening by automating many of the functions currently conducted manually.
"Thanks to the support of our airport and airline partners a TSA Pre✓® enrollment center is now open in Terminal 1 at O’Hare," said Bob Allison, Acting-Federal Security Director for Chicago O’Hare International Airport. "TSA is excited to add yet another location where Chicago-area travelers can apply for TSA Pre✓® status."
"TSA Pre✓® offers our customers an improved travel experience by providing expedited screening at airports across our system," said Greg Hart, United’s chief operations officer and executive vice president. "This enrollment center at one of our largest hubs provides our customers with a convenient opportunity to enroll in the program and enjoy a better airport experience."
"TSA checkpoint wait times for passengers at Chicago’s airports have dramatically improved this summer and the TSA Pre✓® program supports this positive trend," said Ginger S. Evans, Commissioner, Chicago Department of Aviation. "TSA Pre✓® helps meet our most important priorities for air travelers – safety, security, and an excellent customer experience at the airport. I want to thank our local TSA partners for opening a permanent TSA Pre✓® enrollment center for the convenience of passengers traveling through O’Hare, as well as visitors to the airport."
Once approved, travelers will receive a Known Traveler Number and will have the opportunity to utilize TSA Pre✓® lanes at security checkpoints at more than 180 participating airports and on 18 airlines. TSA has opened more than 380 application centers across the country, including approximately 40 airport locations.
As always, TSA continues to incorporate random and unpredictable security measures throughout the airport and no individual will be guaranteed expedited screening.
