James Gregory

James Gregory was named Deputy Assistant Administrator for Strategic Communications and Public Affairs in June 2017.

Previously, Gregory was the Director of Media Relations at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. While at UNC Chapel Hill, he led the university’s media relations team, provided trusted communications counsel to senior administrators and the chancellor, and served as the primary university spokesperson.

Gregory also served more than 22 years in the U.S. Army in various positions within the 1st Cavalry Division, 3rd Special Forces Group and Army Special Operations Command. His final position in the Army was as a press officer in the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs where he supported the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence and then the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy. He also deployed to Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom in both operational and public affairs roles.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology from James Madison University and a master’s degree in Strategic Public Relations from the University of Southern California.
