Acting Executive Assistant Administrator

Thomas Bush was named acting Executive Assistant Administrator in January of 2021, responsible for the formulation and execution of approximately $726m of fees and appropriated funding and the management of a workforce over 1,200 full-time positions across in over 100 locations throughout the United States and Globally.  Prior to this role, he served as the Deputy Executive Assistant Administrator for Operations Support since January 2020. He pioneered the business resumption plan for Administrator Pekoske as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Mr. Bush also served as the Assistant Administrator for Intelligence and Analysis from November 2015 to January 2020.   He was previously the Deputy Assistant Commissioner for the Office of Intelligence with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Prior to his role at CBP, Mr. Bush served a two-year assignment as the Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Homeland Security on Vetting and Intelligence systems.

Mr. Bush began his career in 1991 as a program analyst for the Department of Defense Strategic Defense Initiative and entered the U.S. Customs Service in 1994.  Mr. Bush was appointed to the Senior Executive Service in 2010 as the Executive Director for Intelligence and Targeting, where he was responsible for supporting CBP’s counterterrorism mission through the analysis of advance traveler and cargo information, providing frontline officers with targeting indicators on high-risk movements approaching the border.

Mr. Bush is one of the first U.S. Department of Homeland Security graduates of the Naval Post Graduate School Executive Leadership Program and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Elon University.
